Mentorship
Mentorship List Mentorship Benefits

Assets’ Mentorship Program extends learning beyond the curriculum, develops self-esteem with career-related responsibility, opens access to community role models and demonstrates that career development is continuous with schooling and growing-up. Mentorship challenges and enhances students’ strengths, talents and interests, thereby providing critical connections between school and careers.

The benefits to the student include immersion, awareness, exploration, relationships, guidance, relevance and high school credit; the community benefits by linking the School with community resources.

Students in the Mentorship Program assume positions at various companies and organizations including medical clinics, veterinary hospitals, automotive dealerships, restaurants, retail shops, computer and technical training facilities, health and human services and more. Mentors unselfishly give their valuable time, expertise and enthusiasm to Assets’ students. In turn, Assets high school students meet the challenge of being responsible, hard working and dedicated employees. They continue to learn about themselves, the working world and how they can best fit into a professional environment.

Mentorship sites are selected based on student interest and personal qualifications. Students are required to proceed through an application process that includes resume and cover letter writing and personal interviews prior to being “hired” at their mentorship site preference.

Students work at their mentorship site every Wednesday from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. throughout the school year beginning in October through March. Students are required to adapt to the standards of dress and behavior appropriate to their mentorship activities.

Expected outcomes of the Mentorship program include completion of a weekly journal and development of an independent project related to the student’s specific placement. Upon successful completion of these requirements, students receive high school credit necessary for graduation.
