Curriculum &
Methodology
ASSETS offers day programs for the gifted, gifted-dyslexic, and dyslexic student
in a supportive environment where classes are small and curriculum is individualized
and matched to meet a child's specific needs. Faculty are specially trained
to provide acceleration, remediation, and enrichment. Developmental programs
are provided to dyslexic students who need structured language intervention
using a multi-sensory approach (Orton-Gillingham, Slingerland, Project Read
and ASSETS's own Advanced Language Curriculum). Gifted students are taught
using Kaplan's Differentiated-Integrated curriculum model as well as Renzulli's
model. A selection of elective and enrichment courses for all students is
balanced between Technology and the Arts and encourages curiosity, self-expression
and the acquisition of skills and concepts.
The K-8 program is taught in self-contained, small-group classrooms where
the student-to-teacher ratio is 8:1. Student Profiles based on comprehensive
psycho-educational testing are developed for each child and form the basis
of class placement and curricular decisions. Emphasis on returning to
the mainstream of education through transitional planning is integrated
in the intermediate student's program.
The High School program offers small-group instruction. Faculty provide
daily counseling and study skills support to students. Independence and
accountability are fostered through a carefully structured progression
of courses and activities. Classroom accommodations and individualized
instruction in regular high school curriculum is balanced with remedial
strategies designed to enhance reading, writing, thinking, and computation
skills. Mentorship provides opportunities for students to explore career
options, pursue passions and capitalize on their strengths in hands-on,
community-based learning experiences. Placements have included research
labs, museums, radio stations, businesses, and offices. More than 90% of ASSETS' graduates are accepted into colleges and universities in Hawaii and abroad.
